We didn't have to go far out of Chiang Rai to find the wilderness. There was a little mountain loop up to a waterfall and through a tea plantation. We had been told of a guesthouse to stay in, they cooked us dinner and breakfast as well - there was nowhere to buy anything. Lots of bamboo and a nice walk around the waterfall. Next morning we completed the loop and had a soak at some hot springs. We had seen them the day before but the afternoon was too hot. Early lunch then headed off on the rd up the left hand side of the river. About 40 km before the next bridge to cross over. Turned out the rd was more of a mountain bike track. Nothing quite like a mountain bike ride with panniers! 65 km in total for the day. At one hill it took both of us to push one bike up to the top, then we had to go back down to get the other. First crash - a steep concrete rd down turned into a dirty dusty gravel rutted track. Lucky I was going very slow before I parted company with my bike. My left knee took the brunt of it. But could have been worse.
Was an interesting day, lots of small hill tribe villages living off the land. A few motorbikes and 4 wds
When we finally found the bridge and biked another 10 km to accommodation it was almost dark, I was covered in dirt, tired, hungry and just a tad grumpy...
Much better after a shower, a cup of tea and dinner of fried rice.

Looking pretty damn remote, do you feel safe? That bridge looks decidedly dodgy.
